SUMMER CAMP 2019

Dragonfly Art Studio will offer thirteen weeks of summer camp in May, June, July and August of 2019 for children ages 5 – 16. In order to keep the content exciting and innovative, the specific projects change each summer. There will be different projects and/or mediums, and the types and number of projects completed will be determined by each student’s interest and enthusiasm.

Summer Camp Details

Please read the following carefully before registering your child.

  • This year, we are offering twelve different art themes over thirteen weeks: Painting and Sketching; First Nations; Classic Analog Photography; Sewing I & Sewing II; South American Arts; Folk Arts; Japanese Arts; Egyptian Arts; Ancient Greek Arts; Sculpture; Printmaking; and our Summer Sampler.

  • HOURS: DROP OFF BETWEEN 9-10 AM - 4 PM , Monday-Friday (before and after care available at $10/hour: 8-9 AM & 4-6 PM)

  • We offer a low student to teacher ratio.

  • All summer camp classes will be held at Dragonfly Art Studio located at 1513 Third Street.

  • Kids must bring their own healthy snacks and lunch. We may go on short walks and play outdoor games to break up the day so please pack sunscreen, hats, a water bottle, and appropriate shoes.

Cost

  • $239.00 per week plus a $65 material fee plus 8.4375% NM tax. *$30 additional material fee for Sewing and Photography camps.

  • Space is limited. A non-refundable deposit of $100 plus tax for each week is due upon registration. Your child will only be officially registered when I receive your deposit.

  • Full payment is due two weeks prior to start date. (I also charge a $25.00 fee if the tuition has not paid at least 2 weeks before each weekly camp session starts.)

To Register:

  • Refund of the balance will be given if we are notified at least two weeks before the start of that week of camp and the spot can be filled.

We offer two ways to register and pay:

Please register your child by downloading and printing our registration form. We need only one form for each child for the whole summer. If you are registering multiple children, please fill out a separate form for each child.

Option 2. REGISTER AND PAY ONLINE

You may register and make a payment online through our secure site. If you register online, you will need to register for each week of camp, unless you want to enroll for the entire thirteen weeks of camp— there is an option for that at the bottom of the page. Under payment options, please choose either the $100 deposit or the full payment for the week, then click Add to Cart.

At checkout, you will be asked to fill out our online registration form for each child.

The balance payment is due 2 weeks prior to start date. Please note there is a 2.9% fee added for processing online payments.

PAINTING AND SKETCHING

For this week, students will focus on learning the basic art concepts of painting, such as understanding the light source, color, texture, perspective and proportions, and apply them to figure drawing, sketching and their own self portraits..

FIRST NATIONS

Students will study different indigenous tribal motifs, symbols, colors, and art forms while creating new work inspired by the original Native cultures, such as totem poles, masks, baskets, quilts, printmaking, bead art, and paintings.

June 10- June 14, 2019

CLASSIC ANALOG PHOTOGRAPHY

We will learn the increasingly rare art of properly exposing film, processing paper negatives and printing photographs in a real darkroom! All students will also learn about the history of photography, make a pinhole camera and learn to take photographs with it . Additionally, this camp will allow them to explore polaroid transfers, Cyanotype, idiko fabric printing, Rayograph, and hand painting photos, while learning about lighting, subject matter, style and much more. If your child took this class last summer, they will have the opportunity to explore the medium more and refine their technique.

SEWING I

All levels are welcome! If a student has never taken the class before, we will teach them pressing, pattern making, seam allowance, installing zippers and buttonholes, plus understanding the strength and weaknesses of various fabrics. Among the skills that we will teach students are how to follow a pattern or make their own, use sewing machines with confidence, and hand sewing. Students will design and sew their own cloth bags, along with other projects. If a student has taken this class in the past they will further their knowledge of sewing and get more comfortable with the skills, some students take both weeks of sewing in order to take on more ambitious and complicated sewing projects.

SOUTH AMERICAN ARTS

The traditional art of South America is as varied as it is rich. From arts as ancient as pottery and textile weaving to colonial traditions of paintings and wood carvings, these artistic forms also reflect the history and culture of the many communities people throughout South America.

FOLK ART

Students will study the body of work and mediums of the folk and traditional artists who will be presenting at the 2019 Santa Fe International Folk Art Festival. They will create work inspired by these living artists, and then meet them in person at the Festival and International Market, which is held the weekend after this week of summer camp. The exact artists, mediums, and inspired projects will be decided once the 2019 International Folk Art Festival artists are announced.

JAPANESE ARTS

Japanese art forms range from the traditional: ink painting, calligraphy, shibori indigo dying, printmaking, origami, iris paper folding, kite making, sashiko embroidery, to the contemporary: manga and anime cartoon drawing. Additionally, we will create Japanese-inspired projects such as lanterns, masks, and weavings.

Students will learn about classical Egyptian art forms including papyrus paper making, hieroglyphic letters, mask making, sculpture, painting, architectural symbols, jewelry, glass fusing, and ceramics in the context of Egyptian mythology and its many gods and goddesses.

ANCIENT GREEK ART

We will draw from the four periods of ancient Greece (Geometric, Archaic, Classical and Hellenistic) and study pottery, metal work, sculpture, coin design, mosaics, jewelry and painting as the inspiration for the student’s work. Other references will include the Greek deities and mythological creatures.
